For over two decades, Chef Kevin Stout has been a cornerstone of Tallahassee’s culinary scene. As the former Executive Chef and co-owner of Food Glorious Food, he built a reputation for fresh, elevated cuisine and warm hospitality. Now, after 40 years in the industry, 22 at FGF, Kevin is beginning a new chapter—one filled with gratitude, purpose, and renewed creative energy—as Executive Chef of the prestigious Governors Club.
Kevin’s love for food began early. “I was the kid that made everyone in the neighborhood grilled cheese,” he shared. At just 13 years old, he started working in restaurants—lying about his age to get a foot in the door. His early experience in Naples exposed him to upscale dining, and that foundation never left him.
Although he earned a criminology degree from Florida State University, Kevin’s path always led back to the kitchen. “When I graduated, I was offered the Executive Chef job at the old Andrew’s Second Act. At the time, it was one of the premier restaurants in Tallahassee.”
His leadership journey continued as Executive Chef and Partner at Kool Beanz Cafe. Then came a serendipitous opportunity: “Susan Turner approached me about partnering to take over Food Glorious Food,” he said. “It was just great timing and synchronicity.” What began as a quaint lunch and catering spot soon evolved. “Susan had great food that no one else was doing. The more I looked around, the more I thought—this is a great location for what I really wanted: an upscale restaurant with fresh, higher-end cuisine. We did so well that we eventually expanded to downstairs as well”
With support from Susan Turner and the creative freedom to shape every element of the business—from food to design—Chef Kevin turned FGF into a Tallahassee institution, even earning a “Hall of Fame” honor in Florida Trend Magazine. “I’m very fortunate to have had a partner who allowed me to do what I thought was right,” Kevin said.
But after 22 successful years, it was time for a change. “At almost sixty years old, I felt like I still had a lot left to offer,” he shared. Running a business through shifting costs and challenges had become increasingly stressful, and Stout longed to refocus on his passion for cooking and creativity.
That shift also included going back to school. “Education has always been important to me.” Chef Kevin pursued the Certified Executive Chef (CEC) certification through the American Culinary Federation, taking classes in food cost accounting, nutrition, sanitation, and more. “The practical exam was one of the hardest culinary tasks I’ve ever done,” he admitted. “I have to give credit to local CEC Nikki Pettineo—without her, I probably would not have passed.”
His journey has now come full circle. Nearly 26 years after working at the Governors Club under Certified Master Chef Jack Shoop, Kevin has returned—this time as Executive Chef. “This is a job I always wanted,” he said. “The resources and the venue are second to none.”
And guess what? Chef Kevin won’t be the only familiar face at the Governors Club—his wife Michelle, the legend behind the famous dessert case at Food Glorious Food, is joining the team as Pastry Chef!

The Governors Club, a private dining club with a long-standing reputation in Tallahassee, has recently undergone more than $5 million in renovations. “The place is clean and looks brand new,” Kevin noted. “It’s still a beautiful blend of classic southern charm with new modern touches.” The Governors Club has a growing base of over 1,000 members and they anticipate capping enrollment once they hit 1,200 to preserve the quality of experience and personalized service.
The transition from FGF to the Club offers Chef Kevin broader resources and the chance to elevate the culinary program even further. “We did some great things at FGF, but the margins were so slim. Here, the limitations are much less. I really want to take the food to a much different level.”
Kevin envisions bringing back super fine dining nights, introducing al fresco brunches, and elevating everyday dining in The Grill. “Private clubs can get James Beard awards—and that is one of the goals I have in mind.”
Most importantly, Chef Kevin remains deeply grateful to those who helped shape his journey. “I could not have made this journey without the support of my great partner Susan Turner and the incredible staff I’ve been blessed to work with over the years. And especially without the support of my wife Michelle—Pastry Chef at FGF and a graduate of The Culinary Institute of America. She’s been a huge reason for our success.”
He’s also thankful for the warm welcome from the team at the Governors Club. “I feel great here. Barry Shields, the general manager is outstanding. One of the best I have been around. He knows everyone and is local grown!”
Chef Kevin Stout’s story is one of talent, timing, and tenacity—but above all, of gratitude. From grilled cheese beginnings to one of the most prestigious kitchens in the city, his journey reminds us that great food starts with heart, hard work, and a little help from the people who believe in you.
